Essential Questions:

  • What is terrorism?
  • Who decides on what constitutes terrorism?
  • Where is the world headed in the next century?
  • When is the use of force acceptable?
  • What principles govern how force can be used?

Objectives:
  • Define terrorism
  • Evaluate the impact of terrorist attacks, like the September 11th events, on the American public and the world
  • Explain the role of Osama bin Laden and AL Qaeda in the modern age of terrorism
  • Assess the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist
  • Evaluate the importance of perspective in an historical event

Day 1: Monday 6/10

You will do all of the following on a Word document. This will be counted as a QUIZ grade.

1. Define TERRORISM in your own words (not the one from the book) - it's ok if your definition is not perfect.

2.Some key vocab to know:

  • 1. Terrorist
  • 2. Osama Bin Laden
  • 3. September 11
  • 4. Munich Olympics - 1972
  • 5. State sponsored terrorism
  • 6. Islamic Jihad
  • 7. Al-Qaeda
  • 8. Middle East

-Look all of these up using Vocabulary.com (for some you may have to search Google) and rewrite the definitions in your own words in your Word document.

3. Go onto Google or Bing and find 5 images using the following search terms:

-September 11, 2001
-USS Cole
-British Bus bombings
-Madrid Subway
-Mumbai attack

First, copy and paste those 5 images into your Word document. Next, make a list of at least 4 similarities and 4 differences between these images - more than 4 is even better but you need at least 4 of each. Lastly, explain why you think there are similarities and differences between these images.

Email your work to me by the end of the class period at enoksenl@peabody.k12.ma.us (if I don't receive it, you won't get credit)

For HW tonight:

You should complete the following questions for the political cartoons you will receive at the end of class:

1) Who or what is depicted in the cartoon?
2) What is the point of view of the cartoon?
3. What is the message of the cartoon?
4. What event(s) is this cartoon referring to?

**If you finish early, start working on the political cartoons HW assignment. (See me for this.)

Day 2-5: Tuesday 6/11 - Friday 6/14

One Person’s Terrorist is Another Person’s Freedom Fighter
Directions: Research one of the terrorist organizations listed below in the attached Word document.
  • You may work with a partner or on your own.
  • Choose a terrorist organization from the list below to research.

GOAL: Find out how much influence this group has in the world. During your research you must also find out if the US should be concerned with this terrorist organization. Lastly, determine whether or not it should continue to be designated as a terrorist organization.

ROLE: You are an international terrorism expert or a member of one of those organizations.

FINAL PRODUCT: You are to produce a visual aid – a PowerPoint, poster, brochure, or Glogster complete with text – emailed to me at enoksenl@peabody.k12.ma.us (if I don’t receive your PowerPoint, poster, brochure or link to your Glogster by email, you won’t get credit)

Due Friday 6/14!

*If you choose to do a Glogster, you will have to create an account. Glogster is a virtual poster, one that you can attach video clips, audio clips, and animations to in addition to pictures and text. Check out the Glogster I created as an example on the Ulster Volunteer Force, considered to be a terrorist organization in the UK and in Ireland:
